Google Sees Stars, Personalizes Search with Fun Feature

This week Google added a new feature to their Search functionality and it is oh-so-handy.

Basically, it’s the stars you use to differentiate messages in Gmail, but now you can use them to favorite search results (just like Tweets!). Simply click the star marker on any search result or map, and the next time you perform a search, your relevant starred items will appear in a list right at the top of your results:

Google Buys Picnik, Photo Editing Enters the Cloud

On Monday Google shelled out more cash for the acquisition of Picnik, a photo-editing website that allows users to edit right inside their browser, rather than purchase or download the necessary software. Despite the idea of "being in Cyberspace" and the power of the Internet to connect us to people all over the world regardless of our location, we often use a browser to find out about people and services close to us. These might be queries such as finding the opening times of a local store, the time of a train or local expertise. At a first glance, it's not always entirely clear on the differences between them and when you may wish to use one over another. Here's a brief overview which hopefully makes this a bit clearer.

Microsoft Compares Their Hosted Service to Google Apps

We know there is increasing competition for cloud-based services. But one of the biggest competitions — between Google (news, site) and Microsoft (news, site) — just got a little more interesting when a Microsoft written Hosted Services Comparison Whitepaper crossed our paths. Do you know which set of cloud-services is better? Microsoft thinks they do.

Story

One of the decisive moments in computing history was when Microsoft was investigated for and found guilty of breaching US rules on anti-competitive behaviour. Microsoft's line in defending itself was that it was not anti-competitive, that this investigation was all down to desperate, failed competitors trying to take their petty revenge by setting the government on the company, and that it should be allowed to “innovate”, untrammelled by those silly governmental authorities that just don't understand all this groovy technology stuff.
