Linux/Open Source
Come 2013 Linux will power 20% of mobile devices
2013 is a long long wait for Mobile Linux to kick some serious "behind", ABI Research has predicted that by 2013 Mobile Linux will be 20% of Mid-Ranged and High-End Mobile Devices.
No doubt that Google Android will be apart of that 20% along with other Linux offerings from the LiMo Foundation, Azingo, OpenMoko and even Nokia's Maemo project that is running on their Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.
Microsoft, Symbian, (which sounds like a sex machine than anything else) along with Apple better watch out as Mobile Linux is set to take over in all it's fragmentation glory.
Google Android on the iPhone, hopefully.
This week has been a really fair week where Google Android is concerned, nothing new about Android has been revealed but that didn't stop some impressively skilled set of guys from turning the Blosphere inside out with their port of Android to the Nokia N810 and then to the HTC Tilt. So what is the next high road set for Android? Not Symbian of course!
SlideME - Android Content Provisioning
Google Android Devices are months away from launch but already you can find multiple websites focusing on becoming the number one spot for Android Applications.
Today i introduce to you, SlideME, i put more focus on SlideME because it is a different approach compared to the competition. Not only is SlideME a website where small developers can upload their applications, get donations, get hired, get their applications rated etc all in one place, but it is also a client you will be able to download to your Android Device.
57 Reasons to visit Google I/O
Thu, 04/10/2008 - 13:00 | by AnonymousThis bit of news fits well for developers who are developing for Google Android or any other developments that have Google in mind, thats fanboyism speaking.
The Google I/O developer conference will be held on May 28th and 29th in San Fransisco and will be showcasing 52 of some of Google's top employees to speak at the event plus five experts from outside of Google. As you can see, it will be an interesting even to be at and it is awfully sad that I will not be able to attend as I am planning on learning java.
Here are some of the speakers that will be chatting away at the event:
Dan Bornstein
Dan Bornstein is the tech lead at Google for Android’s virtual machine and core library efforts, where he developed the specification for the Dalvik virtual machine. He continues to contribute to its implementation along with several coworkers. He studied computational linguistics as an undergrad, earning a B.S. in Cognitive Science from Brown University. Dan lives in San Francisco, where he particularly enjoys participating in the experimental electronic music scene.

HP Competes with Eee PC
Tue, 04/08/2008 - 19:32 | by Anonymous
It seems all the big Computer manufacturers are are squirming over the success so far of Asus Eee PC which is basically a Micro Laptop. While not as powerful as normal Notebooks, the Eee PC makes up for that in it's easy portability.
Now after months of Asus Eee PC making headlines everywhrre, HP has finally gotten themselves in the party with the likes of the HP 2133 Mini-Note which has either a 7" or 8" screen and is powered by VIA's C7-M processor, clocked at up to 1.6GHz.
Compared to the Eee PC this baby is boasting 2GB of 667MHz DDR 2 memory on board, and storage options include 120GB or 160GB, 5400rpm or 7200rpm hard drives, Bluetooth 2.0 (optional), and Wi-Fi. Did I mention that it runs Linux? Yeah it runs SuSe Linux so all Ubuntu users like myself will be passing this one by.
For the non Linux Advocates, there will be versions with XP and Vista installed so get ready to shop till Android takes over the planet.
Google Android Running on Nokia N810
Tue, 04/08/2008 - 15:52 | by AnonymousDon't you just like it when I conjure up stories like these? Google Android running on a third-party device is a dream come true for plenty of people, we already know that Android runs on the Sharp Zaurus and the armadillo 500 and more.
The next big leap for Android was to run on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet and guess what? It WORKS!!! elinux.org has a wiki page with a guide on how to install and run Android on a Nokia N810. The article assumes you are familiar with some basics of embedded ARM Linux. E.g. you should know how to use diff & patch, how to boot your embedded ARM SoC with a recent non-Android Linux, how to use a cross compiler etc.
Here are some proof of what I am saying
Google Android under fire
Mon, 04/07/2008 - 16:55 | by AnonymousRemember that story Fragmentation intended by Android? Well some lone ranger over at Google Groups took it upon himself to attack Google directly with the fragmentation issue that Sanjay Jha, chief operating officer of Qualcomm's chipset division stated.
After the lone ranger made his points and claims, Google's Dan Morrill replied by saying:
Jha is not a Google employee, and does not speak for Google; at best, he
might be speaking for his own company. His statements as quoted are
obviously way out of step with the real objectives of Android, and are his
personal speculation insofar as they mention Google.
The sole goal of the Android project is to produce a high-quality, fully
open platform designed from top to bottom for mobile. Google is involved
because we want to help build the kind of platform we want to use.
Fragmentation intended by Android?
Fri, 04/04/2008 - 23:13 | by AnonymousThats what the chief operating officer of the chipset division at wireless technology and solution firm Qualcomm had to say about Google Android purpose while speaking to the Register.
That was not all, he went on to state that Google wants to ensure that there is no equivalent of Microsoft Office in the mobile phone market. So it seems Google's plan for Android is more than just offering an Linux based Open-Source Operating system, making sure that Microsoft does not get a iron grip on the mobile market with it's office products is very important.
Microsoft's Office Suite in my opinion is the best that they have to offer, and as bad as they are that fact cannot be denied. Google Applications are very important for Google going forward with Android, i mean, thats one of the reasons they push for openness in the FCC Wireless Spectrum so Google Applications are no lomger restricted from being downloaded on to Android Devices.
Interview: WebTide Developers speaks i-jetty and Google Android
Fri, 04/04/2008 - 16:09 | by AnonymousToday I bring to you a really in depth interview with Greg Wilkins, the main Developer behind the Open-Source JAVA Web-Server "Jetty", and Jan Bartel who is the main Developer behind the porting of "Jetty" to Android which is called "i-jetty"
I must say thanks to Greg and Jan for taking a few minutes out of their time to have a chat with me about their product!
AC: Greg tell us about webtide
Greg: Webtide is a Open source services company that support the
Jetty project and related technologies. Webtide offers developer
support (unlimited advice on using jetty and developing web-2.0
applications), production support, project review and outsourced
development services.
Jetty has historically been developed by Mort Bay Consulting, my
own private services company. When we decided that Jetty's uptake
was such that we could justify a larger company, Mort Bay founded
Webtide LLC in the USA as the basis of a larger services offering
for Jetty.
Google Android & OHA won Excellence Award
Thu, 04/03/2008 - 20:42 | by AnonymousMonths before any Google Android Device has been released. already the platform has won an award for Excellence. WirelessWeek the site behind the annual Excellence Awards program, has recognized Google Android and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) because of the promise of innovation and openess.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but this is the first award for Google android and the OHA and you can only expect more awards to drop down the pipe like a bird whom caught a fit while flying (is that possible?) Android promises allot for the Mobile Industry and would expect that with Google calling the shots, nothing can go wrong....wishful thinking there.
LG planning 3G Google Android phone
Thu, 04/03/2008 - 16:14 | by AnonymousLG has been keeping quiet about Android for a log time, but now they came out of their dark little closet with some telling news about their plans for Android.
According to Jung Il-jae, CEO of LG
We are using an open platform for our 3G service. Google and other companies have shown interest.
At this time thought, they have not started formal talks with Google about the matter.
Look out for LG a member of the Open Handset Alliance to launch some mind blowing phones later in the year or the next.
