Review Motorola 6210 for RoadRunner/EarthLink in RTP

On the advice of my brother I recently updated my cable modem from an old Motorola Surfboard Surfboard 4100 to a Motorola Surfboard 6210. The old modem was issued to me from Time Warner to access my Earthlink high speed internet account in Cary,NC near the Research Triangle Park (RTP).

Story

Hedgewars - The Worms redesigned

I remember the old times, when we would gather the whole family, and with impunity besiege the computer without a break.
It was a time of the Worms series reign, a reign that we all enjoyed. Though the initial release hit the skies in 1994, I have never forgotten the past, and it was one of the most wanted Linux games when it happened to convert to it.

Now years have passed, technology has evolved and new possibilities have appeared, but I still look back to those golden years, when computing was most fun, and gaming was most addictive.

Preview of Kubuntu 9.04

It is that time of the year again, along with the beginning of the spring, yet another release of Ubuntu 9.04 codenamed Jaunty Jackalope is coming shortly to a server near you. As the beta version was released couple of weeks ago, I decided to have a quick look and see what can be expected from this coming release. To give things a little bit of twist though, I decided to go with the KDE flavour, and downloaded Kubuntu. I have to admit I didn’t have a particularly positive encounter with Kubuntu 8.10.

KDE 4.3 - early preview

Finally the day has come, when the curiosity about the KDE4.3 development branch took the better of me. Unfortunately the gap between what I was blogging on ( my old /dev/jarzebski) blog caused some confusion on what is really new out there. So the review will be a little unusual, more like a shooting in the dark ‘oh this looks like it’s not in 4.2′ If anything, you’re welcome to send corrections just in case.

The World Beyond Microsoft

Some time ago I read an article on how some Microsoft developers call for some of their leaders to be replaced. Not that I actually care too much, but I started looking at the possible courses of action to happen if Microsoft vanished. What would a Microsoft-free world look like ?

The World Won’t End

First of all, its obvious that the world wouldn’t collapse in this case. Yes, there are plenty of software, either home and business dedicated, that relies 100% on Windows. Microsoft has a large market around its operating system, a market commonly driven by “sell plenty and earn even more” attitude. Such a single-crop area.

Arch Linux - a distro collector’s pick

Are you tired of frequent seeking or all these mega-piles of CDs constantly growing on your desktop? Is there any place left out there? Do you really need to wait another six months to update your software or get the feature you expect? Well, what I want to tell you is that there is a solution! Let me introduce to you, Arch Linux.

End of a (Dead Tree) Era

Ziff Davis, the tech/gaming media company that recently exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is now taking the brave but inevitable step of closing down the print version of PCMag to focus its energy on its growing PCMag online network of sites, led by flagship PCmag.com. The magazine, which was started in 1982, has a storied history, but its print base eroded over the years as its core brand of journalism—news you can use while shopping for computers—moved online. It cut back from bi-weekly to monthly earlier this year. PCMag, which literally invented the idea of comparative hardware and software reviews, at one time during the 80s averaged about 400 pages an issue, with some issues breaking the 500- and even 600-page marks, according to this Wikipedia history.

Ubuntu 8.10 - A Positive Evolution

Ubuntu 8.10 has been installed on my computer for over two weeks now. The tests began with beta version through RC and finished with the final release today. Usually I do not install test versions, however, favourable opinions of my friends convinced me it was worth trying. I have to admit, I am not disappointed with the latest version of Ubuntu, 8.10. And here is why.
